Ello luvs! The story goes like this: Von Economo is my alter ego/alias. I'm a Texas-based visual artist who re-invented myself as a songwriter and singer, and it made sense to me to create a musical persona, for a variety of reasons. The first and most important reason being that it was freeing. To create someone from scratch without all the baggage of a life is both interesting and fun. I get to start over, in a sense!
So here's Von's story:
Von writes hook-laden songs that interpret and synthesize the chaos of life in the early 21st Century. Her debut album melds divergent influences into a cocktail that Bedlamb records label-mate Erik Sanden describes as “Linda Ronstadt on acid drinking out of David Bowie’s brain.” People are starting to take notice. Sanford Nowlin (Boxcar Satan (❤️) alum and writer extraordinaire) of the San Antonio Current says, “…Von Economo’s debut shows the kind of creativity and song-craft that can snowball into a cult following.”
Produced by Von and Grammy-winning guitarist, writer and producer Joe Reyes (the sweetest, most open-minded and talented dude in the world) the album dresses edgy rock with lush, shimmering arrangements. There is bit of glam, a bit of woozy poet, and bit of cerebral artist. Von clearly cares deeply about the lyric, always with a visual artist’s eye. Throughout she evokes vivid imagery that invites the listener to see and hear the fractured nature of life, while still holding onto hope.
It was only a few years ago that Von picked up the guitar in earnest, after putting it down for a very long time. Wanting to improve, she bought a 12-string and started taking lessons from Reyes, long-time friend and collaborator on art/music projects. Outlaw art critic Dave Hickey (sad update: RIP, Dave, you crazy diamond) provided a spark when he stated that if you’re having trouble being inspired today, go back 10 years. If you don’t find it there, go back 10 more years and keep going until you find it. Dave's inspiration, world events, the death of Bowie, and various other personal struggles pushed Von to immerse herself in all genres of the 70’s music that was played in her house as a child, with a focus on funk, soul, and glam. She began to see striking parallels between that time and our own. Songs began to emerge. Then the music came in a torrent and that was the birth of Von.
